Hi I’m Tom

You might be thinking, why does Tom think he can help me or my organisation. Well, I started volunteering in rescue and sheltering at the age of 15 and it quickly became my passion. A drive for improving the behavioural health of animals, led me to undertake a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Bio-veterinary Science and a Master of Science degree in Clinical Animal Behavior from the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom.

I’ve been involved in a variety of aspects of rescue, including fundraising, home checking, transporting and general day-to-day operations. Since graduating, I’ve been lucky to work at the UKs largest dog welfare organisation as a Training and Behavior Advisor, eventually working across seven rehoming centers before being promoted to Senior Training and Behavior Advisor, where I supported Rehoming Centre Teams across the South West United Kingdom. I now focus on the training and development of behaviour staff across the organisation.

I am a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviorist with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council in the United Kingdom, and a Certified Canine Behavior Consultant and Certified Shelter Behavior Specialist with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultant and a member of faculty and CBATI-KA with the Grisha Stewart Academy.

I am also a Trustee for Hope Rescue Wales. This unique blend of operational and behavioural experience has allowed me to work with rescue and present at conferences internationally. I’m passionate about using my experience to facilitate success in others and I’m excited to find out how we can work together.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

I Started Simplifying Shelter Behaviour to empower shelters and rescues to improve the behavioural health of animals in their care. To achieve the mission I have three main focuses: Individual Animal Support, Upskilling Teams and Organisational Review.  Find out more below

My Philosophy

How Do I Want to Achieve The Mission?

Training Philosophy

Shelter and Rescues are difficult places to be for animals, that’s why I use positive reward based methods. I focus on meeting needs, understanding motivations and addressing underlying causes, rather than just looking insularly at behaviour.

Coaching and development philosophy

We all bring our experience to everything we do. I view my job as facilitating development, allowing us to build on our own experience in order to improve. My sessions are interactive allowing us all to learn from each other as well as developing ourselves.

Organisation Support Philosophy

We are all here for the animals, and our organisations are all at different stages of their journey. Working with several rescues of varying sizes I take an individual and holistic approach to working with organisations of all shapes and sizes.

Communication Philosophy

Shelter and rescue is forever a reactive industry, with every day looking different to the next. I aim to get back to you as soon as possible, but sometimes times scales can vary. I will normally reply within 3 working day.
