I love Simplifying Shelter Behaviour! I work in shelter behavior in the US and stumbled upon the podcast awhile ago. I have listened to all of the episodes ever since! I’ve learned a lot to help the dogs I work with and can’t wait to see more from the show and Tom Candy!
I’d recommend Tom to anyone in rescue who needs help or support with a specific case, staff training or personal development. Tom is a fantastic teacher, he works with you to find out exactly what you’re trying to achieve with the dog, what potential set backs may be, as well as challenging you to believe in yourself that you have the knowledge to help the dog yourself as well. Tom has been able to show me a different angle that I haven’t considered with some training situations, and has helped me get further with so many cases that I was at a blank with, resulting in these dogs finding their forever homes. Even when the outcomes weren’t great, Tom was there and was fantastic at being able to speak through all of the options and outcomes, not only to ensure that the dog had the best chance, but that it meant I could come to terms with the outcome, knowing we had tried everything I could to help the dogs.
About Tom
Having lived and breathed animal shelter and rescue work since the age of 15, its safe to say this is my passion. A drive to learn more led me to undertake a BSc (Hons) in Bio-veterinary Science and an MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour at the University of Lincoln in the UK. Since graduating I am lucky to have been employed at the UK’s largest dog welfare organisation. Initially I started as a Training and Behaviour Advisor at a centre, supporting the behavioural health of around 60 dogs at one time.
I was responsible for assessment, developing and implementing behaviour modification plans, supporting adopters and upskilling staff. After 3 years in this role I spent some time working as a Locum Training and Behaviour Officer and for the last 6 years I have been working as a Senior Training and Behaviour Advisor responsible for overseeing behaviour teams across a number of centres in the South West of the UK.
